Smaugtail

In a couple of days The Hobbit; The Desolation Of Smaug will finally hit the theaters and I for one can't wait. So I made a little cocktail, or smaugtail if you will, in anticipation. Initially I wanted to do something with dry ice or liquid nitrogen for that very dragony smoke effect, but that stuff if difficult to get by. But what better way to celebrate that greedy dragon than by using real gold plated ice cubes. The base for this cocktail is a characteristically red bloody Mary but with the addition of a good amount of wasabi to clear out your nasal passages.

Ingredients

  • Tomato juice
  • vodka
  • wasabi
  • ice cubes
  • food grade gold leaf

Step 1

Pick your poison. A pea size blob of wasabi will give a hint of flavour, a larger blog gives a nice bit of heat, a big blog will make you feel you just breathed fire. This will also depend on how strong your wasabi paste is, because this varies per brand.

Put your chosen amount of wasabi plus a measure of vodka and the tomato juice in a cocktail shaker or empty jar and shake it, wildly. Pour it in you glass.

Step 2

Food grade gold leaf is a bitch to work with, breath on it and its gone. So hold your breath and don't touch it with your fingers, use  tweezers. Use big tweezers to transfer the gold leaf cubes to the drink.
